Vikings win final two matches of CCIW tournament to finish fifth; Samantha Knox finishes season with school record for kills per game; Jenny Preuss moves to third on all-time assists list
The Augustana Vikings closed out the 2004 volleyball season on a winning note with two victories in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin tournament that was held on November 5-6 at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. The Vikings of third year head coachBetsy Knott defeated Wheaton 3-0 (30-18; 30-19; 30-25) for fifth place in the tournament after ending pool play with a 3-0 (30-27; 30-21; 34-32) win over North Park. Augustana ended the year with a 10-25 overall record and a mark of 2-5 in the CCIW. The Vikings accumulated four total points in the standings with two regular season league victories and two tournament wins and finished in sixth place in the final standings.
Sophomore outside hitter Samantha Knox
(United Township HS, East Moline, IL) ended the year as the new Augustana school record holder for kills per game average in a single season. She recorded 592 kills in 127 games for an average of 4.66 per game, bettering the old mark of 4.07 set by Callyn Dittmar in 2003. Knox also finished second in the CCIW in kills per game with 106 in 24 league games for an average of 4.42 per game. Leading the conference in kills was Ashley Smit of Wheaton who had 137 in 30 games for a 4.57 average. Knox now has 901 kills in her career, which still has two more years and she is in ninth place on the school’s career list.
Sophomore setter Jenny Preuss
(Glenbrook South HS, Glenview, IL) has moved all the way up to third on the career list for assists with 1.964. She finished the 2004 season with 1,361 assists in 128 games for an average of 10.63 per game, the second best single season figure in school history. The only mark better is the school record 10.77 set by Kiersten Madden in 2000.
Junior defensive specialist Jeanna Dalton
(Dixon HS, Dixon, IL) finished the season with 497 digs in 107 games for an average of 4.64 per game. That is the second best single game figure in school history, trailing only the school record of 5.92 set by Katie Vegter a year ago. Sophomore libero Nicole Campagna
(Plainfield HS, Plainfield, IL) moved into third place on the single season list of digs per game with her average of 4.51 per game with 523 digs in 116 games.
In the CCIW statistics, Knox was second in kills with 4.42 per game in league play while Preuss was third in assists with 261 in 24 conference games for an average of 10.88 per game. Campagna was seventh in the conference in digs with 124 in 24 games for an average of 5.17 per game.
Knox was a CoSIDA first team Academic All-District selection and she was also a second team all-conference pick in the CCIW.
