2018 Augustana graduate Sam Totten has been named the Vikings'
39th NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winner.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The honors continue to roll in for Viking tennis standout Samuel Totten (University HS, Normal, Ill.). The 2018 Augustana graduate learned last week that he will be a recipient of a National Collegiate Athletic Association Postgraduate Scholarship. He becomes the 39th Viking since 1968 so honored. The $7,500 grant is awarded by the NCAA to "student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition."

Totten is one of just 29 male student-athletes in the nation, from all three NCAA Divisions, to win the prestigious award this spring, including just seven tennis players. A total of nine athletes were selected from the Division III ranks, four of whom played tennis.

The postgraduate scholarship is the latest in a string of accolades garnered by Totten. After earning Academic All-District honors for the second year in a row, he was named a 2017-18 Academic All-American by CoSIDA and Google Cloud. He was Augustana's male Jack Swartz Award winner this spring and last week was named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Man of the Year.

Sam, the son of Joe and Chris Totten of Normal, Illinois, graduated on May 20 with a 3.97 cumulative grade point average while majoring in engineering physics and applied mathematics. As a senior, he helped lead Augustana to its first conference championship in 33 years and the program's first NCAA Division III Tournament appearance ever. Playing number one singles and doubles, he was an All-CCIW selection for the fourth time and a first team pick for the third year in a row. He also collected Viking MVP and Hardest Worker awards for the third time in his career.

Half of the winningest doubles team in Augustana history with classmate Eric Pohl (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.),Totten led the Vikings in doubles wins this year with a record of 21-13. He ranked second on the team in singles victories, posting an 18-10 mark. The two-time team captain finished his career sixth all-time in singles wins at Augustana with a record of 61-40 and third in doubles victories with a 77-41 ledger. His combined record of 138-81 places him third in school history for total wins.
