Vikings finish 19-9 overall and 8-0 in CCIW dual-meet action; finish second at conference tournament; CCIW Player of the Year Caitlyn Schaffer wins conference titles at first singles and at first doubles with Madeline Lombardi; Annie Timm, Morgan Bullen and Faith Johnson win CCIW titles as well; Schaffer, Timm and Zeana Badawi named all-conference
 
The 2017-18 Augustana women's tennis season was highlighted by a perfect 8-0 mark in CCIW dual-meet play, individual conference championships at four flights and the crowning of the program's second consecutive CCIW Player of the Year in junior Caitlyn Schaffer (Kenwood Academy, Chicago, Ill.). With a roster consisting of two juniors, a sophomore and nine freshmen, Coach Jon Miedema's Vikings finished 19-9 overall, second at the CCIW Tournament and second at the league's automatic qualifier. In addition, they were 18th in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region rankings.
 
Schaffer, this year's CCIW champion at number one singles, also won the league's first doubles crown with classmate Madeline Lombardi (Edwardsville HS, Glen Carbon, Ill.) and now owns four CCIW flight championships during her career. She fashioned a record of 15-13 in singles this year and 19-14 in doubles. She'll enter her senior season fourth in career singles wins (78) at Augustana, tied for sixth in doubles wins (78) and fifth in total victories (156). Her career singles (.765) and doubles (.722) winning percentages are both ninth-best in program history.
 
Lombardi, who also won a CCIW championship at number three doubles with Schaffer in 2016, finished the year 19-15—all in doubles action—to become the 27th Viking to surpass 100 career wins. She'll head into her senior season with career marks of 26-21 in singles and 75-36 in doubles, including a record of 43-21 with Schaffer—the third-most victories of any doubles team in program history. The duo was ranked 13th in the Central Region by the ITA this year.
 
Freshman Annie Timm (Prairie Ridge HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) was this year's CCIW champion at second singles. She finished with a team-high 25 wins against just five losses, joined Schaffer on the All-CCIW first team and was named the league's Newcomer of the Year. Timm finished with a 17-13 doubles mark, playing mostly at number two with sophomore Zeana Badawi (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.). The pair finished second in the CCIW.
 
Badawi held down the third singles spot for Miedema. She went 18-16, finished second at the conference tournament and was a second team All-CCIW selection. She was a CCIW champion at fourth singles and third doubles as a freshman. She'll enter her junior season with 45 career wins each in singles and doubles.
 
Morgan Bullen (Colorado Academy, Lakewood, Colo.) and Faith Johnson (Harker Heights HS, harker Heights, Texas) formed Augustana's other CCIW fight champion, winning this year's title at third doubles. The pair was part of an impressive freshman corps for this year's Vikings. Playing mostly at fifth singles, Bullen went 20-11 to rank second on the team in singles wins. Johnson finished the year 11-8 in singles and 16-7 in doubles.
 
Two other freshmen, Maleeha Chowdhury (Rock Canyon HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Margaret Chadick (Plainfield North HS, Plainfield, Ill.), logged the most matches at fourth and sixth singles, respectively. Chowdhury finished 18-12, while Chadick went 16-7.
