Vikings go 4-3 in dual meets; finish fifth at CCIW Championships; Kristin Schoenecker collects three team awards
 
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Coach Dan Lloyd's Augustana women's swimmers finished the 2017-18 season with a 4-3 record in dual meets and a fifth-place finish at the CCIW Championships in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin. Senior Kristin Schoenecker (Edwardsville HS, Glen Carbon, Ill.) was named the Vikings' Most Valuable Performer and also collected the team's Commitment to Excellence and Spirit awards.
 
Lloyd's squad won four straight dual meets to open the season. Augustana won eight of nine individual swimming events and both relays to defeat St. Ambrose 159-59 at the Davenport Central Pool on October 27. Schoenecker and sophomore Morgan Brockhouse (Metamora HS, Metamora, Ill.) each won two individual events and swam on a winning relay. The next day, the Vikings won five of 10 individual events and both relays to score big wins over Knox (178-27) and Millikin (141-73) at the Carver Center Pool. On November 17, Augustana dominated Monmouth by winning all nine individual events and both relays in a 165.5-37.5 swamping of the Scots on the road.
 
A pair of third-place relay performances helped the Vikings finish third at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational on November 18 in Bloomington, Illinois.
 
Augustana placed fifth at the Wheaton Invitational on December 2.
 
Schoenecker claimed a pair of second-place individual finishes and swam on a second-place relay as well, to pace the Vikings in a 181-65 dual-meet loss to Carthage on December 9.
 
At the Grinnell Invitational on January 19-20, Augustana took fourth in the 10-team event with a total of 612 points. The top finisher for the Vikings was Brockhouse with second-place efforts in the 50 freestyle (:25.22) and the 100 freestyle (:55.99).
 
On February 3, in its final action before the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championship, Augustana dropped a pair of dual meets to Wheaton 134-107 and to North Central 137-112 in Wheaton, Illinois. The Blue & Gold did come away with a trio of winning performances. Senior Sara Hovren (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) led a one through four Viking sweep in the 500 freestyle with a winning time of 5:52.23. Junior Ashley Comeau (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) won the one-meter diving with a point total of 258.95 and junior Mia Polinski (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) won the 400 individual medley in a time of 4:59.58.
 
At the CCIW Championships in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin on February 15-17, Brockhouse recorded Augustana's top individual finish, taking fifth place in the 50 freestyle (:24.32). The Vikings recorded a total of 10 Top-10 finishes on their way to fifth place in the team standings.
