Vikings win second straight CCIW championship; make second NCAA Tournament appearance; set school record for dual-meet wins; Lauren Goggin sets school record for total victories; Dana Goggin breaks Augustana career mark for doubles wins; Jon Miedema becomes program's all-time winningest coach; Lauren Goggin named Academic All-America
 
The 2016-17 Augustana women's tennis season was a remarkable one, filled with record-breaking performances, both individually and collectively. With a record of 25-7, Coach Jon Miedema's Vikings set a school record for dual meet wins. The team's final victory of the year—a 5-0 first-round NCAA Tournament win over Coe—was Miedema's 122nd as Augustana's women's coach, pushing him past Larry Flaherty as the winningest head coach in program history. The Vikings won their second straight CCIW championship, captured the league's automatic qualifier and made their second NCAA Tournament appearance in the last three years.
 
Individually, seniors Lauren Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Dana Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) rode roughshod over the school's record book. Lauren finished with a school-record 196 career combined victories and Dana leaves as the school's all-time leader in doubles wins, with 102.
 
Lauren, Miedema's number one singles player, also set a school record for singles wins in a season (33-6) and finished second on the school's career list with 100 singles wins. She went 24-12 at second doubles in 2016-17, giving her 96 doubles wins for her career—second in school history. This year's CCIW Player of the Year finished her career with records of 100-40 in singles and 96-42 in doubles and on June 6, was named an Academic All-American by CoSIDA.
 
Dana was 26-7 this year, mostly at second singles, and tied a school record with 30 wins (30-8) at first doubles. She finished her career second all-time at Augustana with 193 combined wins and third all-time in singles wins with a 91-34 record. Her school-record 102 doubles victories came against just 39 losses.
 
Senior Vicki Andonova (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.), who played mostly at fifth singles and third doubles, finished the year 23-15 and 23-10, respectively. Her 69 career singles wins are 10th in program history and she's 24th with 54 career doubles wins. She finished her career 15th in school history with 123 total wins.
 
Sophomore Caitlyn Schaffer (Kenwood Academy, Chicago, Ill.) went 32-6 at third singles this year and now owns the second and third-highest season totals for singles wins in school history. She sports an .851 (63-11) career singles winning percentage—second-best in Viking history. She spent most of the year playing first doubles with Dana Goggin. Schaffer went 29-8 in doubles on the year and now has 122 total wins at Augustana—tied for 16th in program history.
 
Junior Mollie Magee (Olathe East HS, Overland Park, Kan.) was on her way up the charts as well, when her career was cut short by an arm injury early in the fall. She went 5-0 in singles and 7-2 in doubles to give her career marks of 60-22 and 58-21, respectively. Despite playing barely more than two full seasons, her 118 total victories rank 18th all-time at Augustana.
 
Zeana Badawi (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) had an impressive freshman season at fourth singles and third doubles, posting records of 27-8 and 29-10, respectively.
 
Sophomore Madeline Lombardi (Edwardsville HS, Glen Carbon, Ill.) teamed, for the most part, with Lauren Goggin at second doubles. She went 29-13 on the year along with a 15-18 mark at sixth singles.
 
At the CCIW Championships in Hanover Park, Illinois on October 22, Augustana crowned champions at three singles and one doubles flight. Lauren Goggin, Schaffer and Badawi won at first, third and fourth singles, respectively and Andonova and Badawi were winners at third doubles. Key third-place singles victories by Andonova at number five and Lombardi at number six clinched the team title for the Vikings, who edge out Wheaton by one point.
 
In the championship round of the CCIW Automatic Qualifier held at the Lower Campus Courts on April 29, Augustana won at first and second doubles and the top three singles spots to defeat Wheaton 5-4. Schaffer's win at third singles clinched the victory for Miedema's bunch.
 
After the 5-0 first-round NCAA Tournament win over Coe, the Vikings' record-breaking season came to an end with a 5-0 loss to host University of Chicago in the second round.
