Vikings go 15-10 overall and 6-1 for second place in the CCIW; highest finish since 2010-11; Eric Pohl cracks 100-win mark with Samuel Totten on the verge; together are nearing school record for career doubles victories; Totten named Academic All-District
 
Coach Jon Miedema's Augustana men's tennis team finished the 2016-17 season with a 15-10 overall record, including a 6-1 ledger in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin play. The Vikings took second place in the CCIW regular season as well as in the conference tournament—the program's highest league finish since the 2010-11 season.
 
Individually, juniors Samuel Totten (University HS, Normal, Ill.) and Eric Pohl (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) stood out, playing at first and second singles, respectively, and forming Miedema's number one doubles tandem. Pohl surpassed the 100-win mark for his career, while Totten will hit the century mark with the first win of his senior season. With 55 career doubles wins together, the pair is currently just seven away from the school record of 62, held by John Jevitz and Steve Miller from 1979-82. In addition, Totten earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors this year.
 
At the season-opening CCIW Fall Invitational in Decatur, Illinois, freshman David Gunther Treis (Brookfield Central HS, Brookfield, Wis.) won two flight championships, taking fifth singles and third doubles with sophomore Alex Riddle (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.). Pohl and Totten reached the doubles round of 16 at the ITA Midwest Regional in Kalamazoo, Michigan on September 23-24.
 
Augustana opened the 2017 portion of its schedule by going 5-7 in non-conference duals. The Vikings faced stiff competition, including ranked opponents Wabash, Rose-Hulman and Wisconsin-Whitewater, along with strong outfits from Calvin and Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
 
Miedema's bunch got it going once CCIW play began. Augustana opened with wins over Elmhurst (9-0), Millikin (5-4) and Illinois Wesleyan (9-0) before falling 9-0 to league-champ Wheaton. The Vikings wrapped up regular season play with three more league victories, as well as non-conference wins over Wisconsin-La Crosse and St. Ambrose and a loss to Cornell.
 
At the CCIW Tournament in Rock Island over the weekend of May 4-6, Augustana beat Elmhurst 5-0 in the quarterfinals and Millikin 5-1 in the semis before falling 5-0 to Wheaton in the finals.
 
Totten battled a wrist injury that caused him to miss five dual meets, but still led the Vikings in singles wins with a 14-8 record. Pohl—who filled in at first singles with Totten out—finished 13-12 overall, mostly at number two. Totten and Pohl were the leaders in doubles wins with a 19-8 record at number one—tied for third-most doubles wins in a season at Augustana. The pair already shares the school record with a 20-9 mark in 2015-16.
 
Pohl also logged three doubles victories while Totten was out to finish the season 22-9. His 35 total wins this year pushed his career total to 106—11th-most in school history. With career marks of 43-30 in singles and 56-28 in doubles, Totten sits just one victory from becoming the 17th Viking to 100 career wins.
 
The rest of Miedema's singles lineup consisted, most often, of sophomore Jack Morkin (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) at number three, senior Connor Woolf (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) at number four, senior Nicholas Prabhakar (Rockford Lutheran HS, Belvidere, Ill.) at fifth singles and freshman Scott Daluga (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) at number six.
 
Morkin finished the year with a 9-13 mark, but was 4-1 against CCIW competition. Woolf, who shared team MVP honors with Totten and Pohl, went 8-7 in singles with a 5-1 league ledger. Prabhakar posted a 10-10 record, while Daluga's 13-10 mark tied him for second on the team in singles wins.
 
Morkin and Woolf logged the most matches at second doubles, going 6-5 and Woolf also teamed with senior Jonathon Elsey (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) to go 4-3 at number two. Morkin and Prabhakar went 3-2 at third doubles, as did Riddle and Treis.
