the 2016-17 winter sports season.
A pair of Augustana seniors were named the winners of the Jack Swartz Award for the 2016-17 winter sports season.
Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.), the starting point guard on the basketball team for the past four years was the female representative while
Isaac Smith (Marion HS, Marion, Iowa), the top sprinter on the Vikings men's track & field team, was the male winner. The Vikings had a total of 101 academic all-conference honorees during the winter season, which included the sports of men's basketball, women's basketball, wrestling, men's swimming, women's swimming, men's indoor track & field and women's indoor track & field.
The Jack Swartz Award is given to one male and one female athlete at the end of each athletic season. The honor is given by the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin and each of the eight schools in the league are allowed to pick their own representatives. The only requirement is that the winners must earn a varsity letter in his/her sport and have a grade point average of at least 3.50. The award is named after the late Jack Swartz, who served as the Commissioner of the CCIW until his death in 1998.
Mayer is a two-sport standout for the Vikings. Besides her duty as the point guard on the basketball team, she is aslo a standout
Lohmeier is a two-time Academic All-America winner in women's soccer as selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). She has the distinction of playing and starting every game (78 games) in her career. She carries a 3.96 grade point average in biochemistry.
Lohmeier anchored the Vikings defense from her central midfield position and in 2016 she also tied for the team lead in goals with six, half of which were game-winners. She also had two assists and led the team in total points with 14. She finished her career with 15 goals and two assists for a total of 32 points.
She served as team captain for Augustana in 2016 and was named to the all-conference team of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin for the second straight season. She is a four-time academic all-conference selection.
During the summer of 2016 Lohmeier worked under a research fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota where she was selected to present a paper at the American Society of Nephrology Kidney Week. She has been a research assistant in the Augustana Chemistry Department and also serves as a tutor for a human anatomy course.
Lohmeier has been active in the community as well, serving as a Young Life leader for Moline High School. She is an active member of the Augustana Fellowship of Christian Athletes and still works as a liberal studies retreat leader.
Hannah is the daughter of Heather Mabie of Madison, Wisconsin and James Lohmeier of Waunakee, Wisconsin.
Osing, who was the Vikings number one runner in every race he finished this fall, has a 3.52 grade point average while majoring in public health. He qualified for the NCAA Division III national meet with a 12
th place finish in the Midwest Regional on Saturday, November 12 in Winneconne, Wisconsin. In the national meet, which was held in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday, November 19, he finished 42
nd.
He was seventh in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championship meet on October 29 and was also in the top 10 of the Western Illinois Invitational (September 2), Brissman-Lundeen Invitational (September 23) and Illinois Intercollegiate Championships (September 30).
As a junior he earned NCAA Division III All-America honors when he finished fifth in the 5000 at the 2016 indoor national track & field meet. He has been one of the top distance runners for the Vikings throughout his career.
Osing was the Augustana team captain in cross country as a senior and will serve in that same capacity. He was an all-conference performer in cross country in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and he finished second in the CCIW 5000 in the indoor conference meet as a junior in 2016.
He worked for the Sangamon County Health Department in Springfield, Illinois during the summer of 2015 and is the son of Glee Osing of Havana, Illinois.
