Senior Ethan Benoit won at 197 pounds on Friday at Chicago to
move his 2016-17 record to 18-9. It wasn't enough, however, as the
Vikings fell to the Maroons by a score of 21-18.
CHICAGO, Ill. – Augustana was strong in the beginning and again at the end but a six match skid in the middle cost the Vikings dearly on Friday, February 3 in a 21-18 loss to the University of Chicago on the Maroons home mat. Head coach
Eric Juergens' team won the first two weight classes and the last two but lost the six in between and the result was a tough three-point loss.
Freshman Trenton Jackson
(Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) picked up a forfeit at 125 pounds and junior
Brendan Gould (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) moved his record to 22-12 with an 8-5 win over Elliot Henderson at 133 to give Augustana a 9-0 lead after two weight classes.
The Vikings wouldn't win again until senior
Ethan Benoit (Marist HS, Oak Lawn, Ill.) took care of John Jayne 3-1 at 197 to go to 18-9 on the year. Sophomore
Adarios Jones (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) pinned Patrick Mulkerin in 3:09 at 285 pounds to end the match. Jones is now a sparkling 29-1 this season.
Two one-point losses hurt Juergens' bunch in this match. Senior
Matt Sears (Marist HS, New Lenox, Ill.) fell 5-4 to Kahlan Lee-Lermer at 149 and junior
Christos Giatras (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) also lost a 5-4 decision, this one to Jason Lynch, at 184 pounds.
Augustana, which was ranked 25
th in the latest NCAA Division III national poll, is now 8-6 on the season and the Vikings will compete in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championship on Thursday, February 9 in Wheaton, Illinois.
