Augustana finishes 15-5-1 overall; 5-1-1 and second place in the CCIW; Vikings land seventh NCAA bid in school history; Lohmeier and Druszkowski make CoSIDA Academic All-American team; Farell and Lohmeier named 1st team All-CCIW; Chew and Hamaker earn 2nd team all-conference recognition
The Vikings made the NCAA Division III national tournament for the seventh time in
school history in 2015 and finished the year 15-5-1.Augustana wrapped up another successful women's soccer season under head coach Scott Meija in 2015. The Vikings finished with an overall record of 15-5-1 and went 5-1-1 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play; finishing second and qualifying to host the semi-final matchup in the conference tournament.
This season the team earned its seventh bid to the NCAA tournament. Senior
Kelly Farell (St. Ursula Academy, Sylvania, Ohio) received several honors this season including the team's Offensive MVP, All-CCIW and NSCAA recognition.
Meredith Chew (Paradise Valley HS, Phoenix, Ariz.) was named the team's Defensive MVP on top of her third All-CCIW honors. Senior
Somer Druszkowski (Lincoln-Way Central HS, Manhattan, Ill.) and junior
Hannah Lohmeier (Waunakee HS, Waunakee, Wis.) were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-American team.
The season began with an away match at University of Wisconsin La-Crosse where the Vikings were victorious 2-1 in an overtime thriller. Lohmeier scored the first goal for the Vikings this season on her way to receiving Academic All-American and first team all-conference honors this November. In their next match they played in their home opener against University of Chicago taking home a 2-0 victory. Freshman
Andria Serra (Alleman HS, Silvis, Ill.) was named CCIW "Offensive Player of the Week" after her first week of collegiate soccer where she had two starts in addition to her first goal and assist.
Over the following weeks the Vikings continued to be hot as they opened the season 8-2. During this early portion of the season, at one time, they had scored 35 goals against one goal allowed in a five game stretch, including three games where they tallied nine goals.
The conference season opened with a 3-1 loss in Bloomington, Illinois against Illinois Wesleyan, who made it to the sectional round in the national tournament. The Vikings then followed the tough loss going undefeated through the rest of the conference schedule wrapping up the regular season 15-3-1.
A 2-1 overtime win over Wheaton at home followed up with a 1-0 victory on senior day against Millikin put the Vikings as the number two seed in the CCIW tournament. After falling to Wheaton 2-1 in overtime in the semi-finals of the conference tournament, Augustana had its eyes set on the national tournament where the Vikings received an at-large bid. The Vikings season ended with a 2-0 loss to Puget Sound in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Kelly Farell (St. Ursula Academy, Sylvania, Ohio) led the team in scoring and points with 15 goals (fifth-most in school history) and four assists for a total of 34 points (seventh-most in school history). Farell wrapped-up her career finishing in each of the top-10 lists of offensive statistics in school history.
Serra, after a strong freshman season, was the runner-up in goals and points this season scoring eight times and earning two assists for a total of 18 points.
Jessica Kras (Glenbard North HS, Carol Stream, Ill.),
Grace Iaquinta (Lincoln East HS, Lincoln, Neb.),
Jessa Rizzo (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) and Bri Frys
(Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) each finished this season with double-digit points helping Augustana to its second place regular season finish in conference. Frys finished the season with nine assists which is good for fourth best in school history in a single season.
With the defense anchored by senior goalkeeper Chew, Augustana finished the season averaging .79 goals against per game. Frys,
Sammi Farkos (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) and
Stef Hamaker (Boylan Catholic HS, Caledonia, Ill.) were all staples of the back line this season holding opponents to only 9.09 shots per game. The Vikings defense finished the season ranked 41
st nationally in shutout percentage out of 417 teams.
