's Augustana women put together another outstanding season in 2013-14, going undefeated during the CCIW regular season and finishing second at both the CCIW Championship and the conference's NCAA automatic qualifying tournament. The Vikings came up a scant two points short of their first CCIW title since 1997-98 and finished the season with an 18-7 record and a number 16 ranking in the NCAA Division III's Central Region. Miedema was named the CCIW's Coach of the Year.

Senior Kim Sawyer (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) went 24-5 and claimed her second straight CCIW number one singles championship. She also teamed with sophomore Aileen MacDonald (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) to win a conference title at second doubles. Sawyer was a first team all-conference selection for the fourth time and earned her second consecutive CCIW Player of the Year award. The ninth-ranked player in the Central Region, she finished her career as Augustana's career leader in singles (106), doubles (72) and total (178) wins. Her career singles winning percentage of .822 is also a school record.

Freshman Lauren Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) was selected as the CCIW's Newcomer of the Year and joined Sawyer on the all-conference first team. Dana Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) was a second team All-CCIW selection and teamed with her twin sister to finish second at number one doubles at the conference tournament.

Augustana won 46 of 54 individual matches in going 6-0 in CCIW dual competition during the fall. That included a 6-3 win over eventual CCIW champion and NCAA qualifier Wheaton. The Vikings also defeated Carthage 6-3 and North Central 7-2 and swept to 9-0 wins over Illinois Wesleyan, Millikin and Elmhurst. Miedema's squad also posted non-conference wins over Loras, Grinnell, St. Ambrose, Knox, and Cornell to finish the fall season with an 11-0 dual mark.

At the CCIW Championship, Wheaton edged the Vikings, with 59 points to Augustana's 57. In addition to championships at first singles (Sawyer) and second doubles (Sawyer/MacDonald) and the Goggins' second-place finish at first doubles, Miedema got second-place finishes from Lauren Goggin at number two singles, Dana Goggin at third singles and MacDonald at number four singles. Seniors Emily Kaczmarek (Glenbard South HS, Lombard, Ill.) and Mariah Bardo (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) claimed third-place finishes at fifth and sixth singles, respectively.

The spring season opened with a trip to Puerto Rico, where Augustana extended its dual-meet record to 15-0 with wins over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, Capital, Puerto Rico-Piedras and Puerto Rico-Humacao, before suffering its first loss to NCAA Division II Southern New Hampshire. The Vikings also lost to powers UW-Whitewater and Washington University as well as Division II Upper Iowa in the spring.

Augustana won its first match at the CCIW's automatic qualifier 6-3 over Carthage, but fell 6-3 to Wheaton in the finals to end the season at 18-7.

Miedema's lineup consisted most often of Sawyer (24-5) at first singles, Lauren Goggin (17-10) at number two, Dana Goggin (15-11) at number three, MacDonald (14-11) and fourth singles, Emily Kaczmarek (19-11) at number five and Bardo (17-9) at number six. Freshman Vicki Andonova (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) also saw action at fourth through sixth singles, posting an 8-1 record. The Goggins went 15-11 as the Vikings' top doubles pair, with Sawyer and MacDonald compiling a 15-6 mark at number two and juniors Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and Miranda Pence (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) going 12-4 at number three.

Not surprisingly, Sawyer was named the Vikings' Most Valuable Player this season. MacDonald earned the team's Hardest Worker award.
