Augustana junior Becca Sund (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) was named to the Capital One Academic All-America team in track & field, it was announced today. She was a third team selection on the elite squad which combines academic excellence with athletic success.

The Capital Once Academic All-America program is sponsored by the College Sports Information Directors of America and the selection of Sund makes her the seventh Viking this year to be honored. She joins football standouts Erik Westerberg (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and Eric Dratnol (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.), soccer star Maggie Hoscheit (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) and track & field stalwarts Josh Eisenberg (Richmond-Burton HS, Spring Grove, Ill.), David Voland (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) and David Devore (Midland HS, Midland, Mich.).

Sund was the co-MVP of the Augustana cross country team in 2014 when she led the Vikings to the CCIW title for the first time since 1998 with a sixth place finish in the conference meet. She was named CCIW  "Athlete of the Week" during the 2013 season.

This past spring she was fourth in both the 1500 and 5000 at the CCIW outdoor track & field championships. She has a piece of the Augustana school record in the 4 x one-mile relay and she ranks seventh on the school's all-time list for 6000 meters in cross country.

She served as classroom helper at Glenview Middle School in East Moline, Illinois throughout the 2013-14 school year and has been a math tutor on the Augustana campus each of the last two years. She also serves as an admissions ambassador. She is involved in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program at Longfellow Elementary School.

A math major with a Spanish minor, she carries a 3.97 grade point average.

Augustana has a rich tradition in producing Academic All-Americans since the program began by CoSIDA in 1952. Currently the Vikings have 153 Academic All-Americans and ranks sixth – all divisions – in the nation. The Vikings are second in NCAA Division III, trailing only M.I.T. and lead both the CCIW and the state of Illinois in number produced.
