Vikings fifth at CCIW Championship; best finish since 2006;

's Augustana golf team posted the program's best CCIW finish since 2006 this year, taking fifth place at the CCIW Championship at the Rail in Springfield, Illinois on April 19-21. The Vikings jumped two spots in the standings and pared 100 strokes from their performance at the 2013 conference tournament. Del Vecchio's young squad—which had only four rounds played by a senior all season—posted an 82-82 head-to-head record, with its best finish being a second-place effort at the 10-team Prairie Fire Classic on March 28-29.
 
Freshman Tanner Obal (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.), who led Augustana with an average of 78.1 strokes per round, was selected as the team's Most Valuable Player. One of three Vikings to play in all 13 events and 28 rounds this season, he recorded Augustana's lowest single round with a 69 at the CCIW Championship and was the team's highest finisher at the event, carding a four-round total of 299 (78-69-74-78) for 11th place. He shot a 73 to tie classmate Eric Swanson (Vernon Hills HS, Vernon Hills, Ill.) for second at the Scot-Vike Invitational, recording the Vikings' highest finish of the season. Obal had a team-high three top-five finishes and was selected as the CCIW's Golfer of the Week on April 2, after tying Swanson for fifth at the Prairie Fire Classic.
 
Sophomore David Ferlmann (Peoria Notre Dame HS, Dunlap, Ill.) was named Augustana's Most Improved Player. His average of 78.5 strokes over 28 rounds was second on the team and he recorded three top-ten finishes. His highest finish was a tie for fifth (73) at the Duane Chanay Invitational on September 8 and his best round of 72 came on day one of the Scot-Fire Classic. He tied for 20th at the CCIW Championship with a score of 307 (79-75-77-76).
 
Junior captain Jake Groselak (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) also played every round and ranked third on the team with an average of 79.1 strokes. A two-time team MVP, his best finish this season came at the Prairie Fire Classic, where he tied for ninth (75-78—153). His best round came on day one of the Big Blue Fall Classic at Millikin, when he carded a 73. He finished 27th at the CCIW Championship (78-80-80-74—312).
 
Swanson was chosen as Augustana's Newcomer of the Year. He played 25 rounds in 12 events and finished fourth on the team with an 80.2 per-round average. He shot his best round of 73 on three occasions, including at the CCIW Championship, where he was Augustana's second-highest finisher and tied for 18th overall (76-81-73-75—305).
 
Junior Grant Murphy (Dunlap HS, Peoria, Ill.) played 21 rounds in 10 events and averaged 81.0 strokes. He shot a 74 to finish sixth at the Scot-Fire Invitational and his best round of 73 came on the final day of the CCIW Championship, where he finished tied for 33rd (84-82-79-73—318).
 
Junior Josh Kukla (Zion-Benton HS, Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) averaged 81.3 strokes over 12 rounds in seven events. He shot a 10th-place 78 at the Scot-Vike Invitational. His best rounds were a pair of 77's at the Prairie Fire Classic and Scot-Fire Classic.
 
Freshman Michael Jacobs (Aquin HS, Freeport, Ill.) played 26 rounds in a dozen events, recording an average of 81.4 strokes per round. His 71 in the third round of the Midwest Region Classic on September 10 was one of two sub-par rounds fired by a Viking this season, joining Obal's 69 at the conference tournament. Jacobs finished 41st at the CCIW Championship (82-78-82-87—329). His best finish was a 14th-place 75 at the Duane Chanay Invitational.
 
Junior Max Channon (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) averaged of 90.8 strokes over 16 rounds in nine events. His best round and top finish both came at the Duane Chanay Invitational, where he shot 73 to tie for fifth.
 
Freshman Kiefer Kious (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) averaged 91.2 strokes over 12 rounds in seven events.
