Â
For the second straight year Augustana senior defensive stalwart
Maggie Hoscheit (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) is a Capital One Academic All-American in women's soccer. The announcement comes from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization that has sponsored the program since 1952.
Â
Hoscheit has been an extremely successful player for head coach
Scott Mejia's Vikings throughout her career and she has obviously excelled in the classroom as well. She has been a fixture in the back line of the Augustana defense for all four years but especially in the last two years. A team captain the last two seasons, she was a first team all-conference selection in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin a year ago and also was an all-Midwest Region selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. She helped the Vikings win the CCIW title in 2012 and advance to the NCAA Division III national tournament. Augustana finished 2012 with a 16-5-0 overall record.
Â
This past year the Vikings finished with a 12-5-4 mark and a 4-2-1 record in the CCIW. Augustana advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament for the second straight season and for the sixth time in school history. Hoscheit was a first team all-conference selection for the second year in a row. She was the top defender for a team that has allowed just 13 goals in 21 games for a 0.59 goals-against-average. Augustana recorded a total of 12 shutouts throughout the season.
Â
During her time as a player she has helped the Vikings to a record of 52-20-10.
Â
Hoscheit, the daughter of John and Teri Hoscheit of St. Charles, Illinois, is a biology major with a 3.88 grade point average. She was the winner of the Jack Swartz Award in the CCIW last fall for her combination of academic excellence and athletic prowess.
Â
An active participant in community activities, Hoscheit has participated in a seven-day live-in mission trip at the Missionaries of Charity's Gift of Peace Home in Washington, D.C. each of the last two summers. She is involved in Athletes Giving Back on the Augustana campus as well as Relay for Life and the Augustana Dance Marathon. She served as the soccer team's leader for the college's local girl scouts "Girl in Sports Day" last spring. She also has served as a Salvation Army food bank volunteer and worked as a hospice volunteer.
Â
Hoscheit is one of just two players from Illinois and the only representative from the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin on the unit. She is the 147
th student-athlete from Augustana to earn Academic All-American recognition since the program began. Currently, the Vikings rank sixth in the nation in number of Academic All-Americans produced, second in NCAA Division III and first in the state of Illinois.
